Treatment of atrial fibrillation mitral valve insufficiency in rheumatic patients

Mario Cesar Santos de Abreu

INTRODUCTION: The mitral insufficiency as a result of the rheumatic fever in young population has important complications augmenting the morbidity and mortality of the valvar disease. In our country, Brazil, it is observed a high incidence of rheumatic fever with secondary valvular lesions – MITRAL INSUFFICIENCY (MI) as well. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to demonstrate particular aspects of this surgical technique and effectiveness in a group of patients, without the need for modern radiofrequency and other methods of ablation; METHODOLOGY: Throughout the years 1997 and 1998, 17 patients underwent surgery for mitral valve and or aortic valve disease. All patients were diagnosed with chronic AF and increased left atrium (LA). THE TECHNIQUE: The technique consisted of performing a cross-section of the left atrium, with partially surrounded the pulmonary veins. CONCLUSION: The partial atrial pulmonary vein isolation proved to be effective in this group of patients, similar to what is observed in the percutaneous treatment of atrial fibrillation. This technique proved to be an alternative in the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation in patients with valvular disease. After one year, 76,4% of patients were in sinus rhythm.
